Cures for Insomnia

Three Ways to Get Better Sleep

If you are having a difficult time falling asleep, it's far preferable to try one of the natural cures for insomnia rather than to reach for a pharmaceutical remedy. Although some of these pills will help you to fall asleep, they really are only inducing a 'fake' sleep that is not necessarily very likely to overcome the problem at the root of sleep pattern disruption.

In effect, pills may knock you unconscious but what you are really getting can hardly be called natural sleep by any stretch of the imagination. If you would really like to cure your insomnia from the root of the sleeplessness problem, here are three natural insomnia cures that you can use which many folks have found helpful in the past.

Natural Cures for Insomnia #1:

The first cure is to block out any extra light or extraneous sound that is coming into the room in which you are trying to sleep. These are the two problems that instigate an inability to get to sleep in many individuals. Things such as noises within the home, like a TV that is playing (no matter how quietly) in the bedroom (or adjoining room) or even somebody that is snoring, can make a big difference in how well you're going to sleep (if at all).

Light also tends to keep us awake because our brain is very sensitive to the changes in light even permeating through closed eyelids. Light informs the brain of how to run the body's natural rythym. If there is light in our bedroom, we are never going to be able to achieve that deep level of sleep that we need in order to feel fully rested and healthily rejuvenated. Long term poor sleep can lead to many potential health issues so attention to these details is paramount.

Natural Cures for Insomnia #2:

The second insomnia cure that you can try is simply to take time to prepare your mind and body for a good night's sleep. This may involve several strategies, such as trying to avoid any type of heavy eating or stimulant drinks, such as those that contain caffeine (like coffee, tea, and many sodas, such as cola) within a minimum of four hours of going to sleep.

You should also avoid watching any television shows or movies that will stimulate your mind and imagination to a level that may keep your brain ticking-over and therefore keep you awake at night.

Following a regular nightly routine can also help prepare the mind and body for sleep. So about an hour before it is time to go to bed, take the time to relax your mind with some soft music or perhaps some poetry or other calming reading material. You might even learn and practice meditation for half-an-hour. Taking a nice warm bath, possibly with added aromatic oils such as lavender oil, and doing some deep breathing exercises, before trying to settle in bed also proves very helpful for many sleep-deprived folks.

Natural Cures for Insomnia #3:

In this short summary, the third natural remedy is to try that good old fashioned standby, a mug of warm milk if you are having a difficult time sleeping. In fact, there is real bio-chemical sense behind this old-wives remedy for sleeplessness that most likely Granny never realized!

Warm milk contains tryptophan which can trigger the body to produce serotonin naturally. Serotonin is a hormone that helps you to 'feel good' and also helps to soothe any stresses that are running through your mind and keeping you up at night.

In addition that mug of warm beverage may also help in producing the other key-sleep hormone, melatonin. This is the natural chemical signal which is one of the body's main ways of sending us to sleep in accordance with our diurnal circadian rythym... more commonly referred to as our 'body clock'!
